Ingredients to Make Keto Cubano Chaffle Sandwiches

  • 2 of your favorite chaffles
  • sliced ham
  • sliced roasted pork
  • pickles (the dillier the better, or go with a sweet and tangy version like these keto pickles)
  • mustard
  • Swiss cheese

How To Make This Keto Sandwich

I like to call chaffle sandwiches chaffwiches. It might never take off, but it’s a fun way to get the point across!

Making this Cubano chaffwich is as simple as 1, 2, 3.

  1. Make your chaffles.
  2. Layer on the ingredients.
  3. Put it under the broiler for a few minutes to melt the cheese, or grill it in a pan to heat it through.

Variations on the Cubano Chaffle Sandwich

Traditionally, Cubano sandwiches are pressed in a hot pan and weighted down to warm everything through and to melt the cheese.

However, chaffles are a bit more delicate and don’t hold up well to that treatment. You certainly can pop the finished keto sandwich into a pan and warm it up, but be gentle!

I found a much better alternative is to heat the sandwich, open-faced, under the broiler for a minute or two.

Pass the Mustard!

Whether you use a regular yellow mustard or a fancier version like Dijon, is entirely up to you.

I don’t claim that this is an authentic recipe, so use whatever mustard you like or have on hand.

Chef Jenn’s Tips to Make This Cubano Chaffle Sandwich

  • Make the chaffles ahead of time to save time! They freeze great and can be heated up in the toaster or back in the Dash chaffle maker.
  • I use leftover roast pork that I’ve sliced very thin. Alternatively, it can be purchased at many deli counters.
  • Add a slice or two of bacon for even extra porky goodness!
  • Don’t like Swiss cheese? Don’t use it! Other good choices are gouda, Monterey Jack, or even pepper jack, if you are craving a bit of a kick.

What To Serve With This Cubano Sandwich

I’m a big fan of soups and sandwiches, so when I make this keto pork recipe I love pairing it with a hearty soup. Wonton soup is one of my favorites, or a delish bowl of .

Salads are another tasty pick with keto lunch recipes, and they don’t have to be fancy or involved like this Cobb Salad. Just a handful of greens and a delish Ranch Dressing will have you all set and ready to go!

Is a Cubano sandwich served hot or cold?

Traditionally a keto Cubano sandwich is served hot, but you can serve them cold and it’ll taste great!

Where was the Cubano sandwich invented?

Rumor has it, the Cubano Sandwich was created in Southern Florida as a way for immigrant workers to enjoy a delish lunch.

Do you need special bread for a Cubano sandwich?

If you want to make it as authentic as possible, you’ll need Cuban bread. But, you can make it however you like – even using chaffles – if you’re not going for authenticity.

Is pork keto?

Yes! Pork is a GREAT source of protein, and it’s a keto friendly choice.
