Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

  • Ground Beef – Helps hold our burgers together and gives them a familiar flavor. Look for lean ground beef with a ratio of 80/20.
  • Ground Pork – Adds richness and moisture to the patties with its higher fat content and deep, meaty flavor. If you aren’t a fan of pork, you can substitute ground chicken, but your burgers will be a bit leaner.
  • Jalapeños – Add a kick of bright spiciness and heat. Feel free to substitute another fresh chili variety like bird’s eye or Fresno.
  • Hoisin Sauce Brings a salty, slightly sweet dose of umami flavor. Oyster sauce or fish sauce with a bit of honey added will also work.
  • Lemongrass Paste Delivers a mild citrus flavor with hints of ginger and mint. Look for the paste in the produce section of your supermarket. Or, if needed, you can use 1 tablespoon of dried lemongrass in its place.
  • Garlic Cloves – Add a dash of pungent, zingy, and zesty flavor.
  • Cheddar Cheese – Optional, but adds richness and a comforting flavor.
  • Peanut Sauce – A simple combination of chunky peanut butter, hot chili paste, and soy sauce. Swap the soy sauce for tamari for a gluten-free version.
  • Garnishes – Cilantro leaves and jalapeño rings add zest and a dash of green.

How to Make Thai Pork Burger With Peanut Sauce

  1. Prepare the Peppers. Chop one of the jalapeño peppers into rings, set aside, and reserve for garnish. With the other 2 jalapeños, remove the seeds and dice into ¼ inch bits.
  2. Form the Patties. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, diced jalapeños, hoisin sauce, lemongrass paste, garlic, salt, white pepper, and cheddar cheese (optional). Mix well, then form into patties.
  3. Grill As Desired. Transfer the pork and beef burgers to the grill and cook them the way you prefer. I like to set the grill to high and cook the patties on one side for about 3 minutes. Then, I reduce the heat to medium, flip the burger, and cook the other side for around 4 minutes. I give one final flip and allow another 2-3 minutes for it to finish cooking.
  4. Make the Peanut Sauce. Use a small bowl to whisk together the peanut butter, soy sauce, and hot chili paste. Set aside.
  5. Toast Buns & Serve. Toast the hamburger buns of your choice before spreading the peanut sauce on both sides of the bun. Add the grilled pork burger patty followed by cilantro leaves and sliced jalapeño rings. Serve and enjoy!

Instructions

  • Slice 1 jalapeno into rings and set aside for garnish. Cut and remove the seeds from remaining 2 jalapeños and chop 1/4-inch dice.

  • In a bowl mix together the ground beef, pork, jalapeños, hoisin sauce, lemongrass, garlic (cheddar cheese) and salt and white pepper. Form into patties.

  • Grill to your liking, I cook first side for 3 minutes on high, then lower heat to medium and flip to cook for 4 more minutes. Flip again and finish with 2-3 minutes.

  • In a small bowl, combine peanut butter, chili paste and soy sauce. Set aside.

  • Toast the bread or bun of choice and spread equal amounts of peanut sauce on both top and bottom cut side of bun. Top with grilled burger and cilantro leaves and jalapeno rings (optional).
