Make Your Prime Rib Taste Amazing

We all know that enjoying a prime rib dinner is a fantastic treat, whether it's Christmastime or any other holiday. Maybe it's a special occasion. Either way, you want the seasoning on the roast to complement the hearty beef flavors!

This flavor-packed rub combines all my favorite herbs and spices that best pair with prime rib and beef cuts. Remember to be generous when seasoning your boneless prime rib or standing rib roast - you'll be glad you did!

🔪 How To Make Prime Rib Rub

This prime rib rub yields just over a ½ cup of seasoning. Use ¼ cup per 5-6 pound portion of your prime rib.

Step 1: Measure and combine. In a small bowl combine all ingredients. Add 3 tablespoons Kosher salt, 2 tablespoons coarse ground pepper, 1 tablespoon garlic powder, ½ tablespoon each of ground sage, dried rosemary, dried thyme, and smoked paprika, plus 1 teaspoon each of dried oregano and onion powder.

*Optional - If you want a fine seasoning blend, use a spice grinder, mortar and pestle, or coffee grinder to break up the herbs.

Step 2: Use or store. If not used immediately, transfer to an airtight container like a spice jar. Store in a darkened pantry or cabinet for the best shelf life.

❓ How To Apply The Rub On To A Prime Rib

To apply the rub to the prime rib, first, make sure your prime rib has been rinsed and patted dry.

Next, use the 'wet hand/dry hand' method to apply the rub. In your non-dominant hand, hold the bowl of seasoning and sprinkle it over the prime rib. Use your other hand to rub the seasoning into the surface of the roast.

Repeat this until the entire prime rib has been coated thoroughly, turning to coat all sides.

If desired, you can use a binding agent like extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) or Dijon mustard as a base to hold the prime rib rub. However, it is not necessary.

🧂 Use This Rub On

  • Prime rib
  • Smoked meats
  • Roast beef
  • Steak cuts like porterhouse, ribeye, NY strips, etc.
  • Pork roasts
  • Mix it into meatloaf for a fantastic flavor.

🥡 Storing

The rub will store in an airtight container for up to 3 years. I do find that with seasoning blends and rubs, using your excess spice blends within 6 months to a year tends to be best.

Placing your storage containers of spices in a cool, dark cabinet will help them to store longer. If you cannot store the spice blend away from sunlight, use a tin to keep the light from reaching your prime rib rub.

Note that the freshness of any spice blend or seasoning mix will vary greatly depending on how old the spices and herbs were to begin with!
